What is Palliative Care?
Palliative Care means comfort care and refers to a special program designed to provide support and care to those who are in the final stages of an incurable disease. Treatment aimed at a cure and prolongation of life is no longer appropriate for these patients. The program is based upon the philosophy that patients should have the highest quality of life possible.
Why is it Important that People Know About Palliative Care?
Palliative Care helps when people know some one with cancer or other serious illnesses that may end life and/or when people are dealing with cancer themselves
Covenant Foundation raises funds for the Palliative Care programs at Covenant facilities throughout Alberta. Presently, our priority campaign is for the Palliative Care Institute however we are proud to also provide ongoing support for these palliative care units:
Mel Miller Hospice - 9Y Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre
Located at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, the Mel Miller Hospice (9Y) has an interdisciplinary team approach to care. With assistance from a patient's physician, the following services are available: Consulting Palliative Care Physicians, Unit Manager, Palliative Consult Nurse, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides, Social Workers, Chaplain, Unit Clerk, Volunteers and consult services provided by Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Recreation Therapist, and Dietician.
The Mel Miller Hospice philosophy is grounded in the Covenant Health Mission by serving with compassion, upholding the sacredness of life in all stages and caring for the whole person – body, mind and soul. Their goal in patient care is to support, provide whatever comfort and to sustain the spirit.

Tertiary Palliative Care Unit - Unit 43 Grey Nuns Community Hospital
Patients who are admitted to the Regional Tertiary Palliative Care Program at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital can expect the highest quality in care. The program offers therapeutic programs that meet the physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs of the patients, their families, and friends. Care is patient centered and patient directed.
This special unit is designed to provide support and care to those who are in the final stages of life due to an incurable disease. Patients considered for admission to the Program are those who are suffering from a terminal illness who are in need of supportive care due to uncontrolled symptoms, severe disability, or unrelieved psycho-social factors.
